I have been a secondary science teacher at
an independent College in Brisbane, Australia, for more than thirty-five years
now, and for most of that period I have held senior leadership positions within the College. From 2003 to 2009, I had the opportunity to lead an extensive whole-of-school renewal program which, in addition to other significant and strategic reforms in school structure, ethos, curriculum and pedagogy, involved the development and implementation of restorative practices across the College.
Since then, I've
presented papers and conducted workshops at national and international conferences on topics including school renewal, school leadership and change management, restorative practices, and the moral emotions of shame, guilt
and empathy.
(See the Presentations page for these papers.)
An experienced trainer and lecturer in Restorative Practices, I work with teachers and leaders from
many other
schools and colleges. My primary research interests include restorative
practices, the psychology of emotion and cognition, school leadership, educational
reform, and teaching pedagogy. I
have had the great privilege of acting as consultant and/or critical friend
with numerous school communities, teachers and students of RP around
Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA. Recently, I contributed to an
edited volume of case studies in applied Affect Script Psychology entitled
'The Psychology of Emotion in Restorative Practice' (see the
Books page for this), and I've
made available
a free eBook exploring the application of the
psycholgoy of affect and script specifically to
behaviour management, teaching and learning, and pedagogy in schools. (Also
- see
here
for an introduction to Affect Script Psychology that I recently co-authored.)| I welcome contact, enquiries and feedback from educators interested in Restorative Practices in the school setting.
